Fugitive is an american crossover thrash band from Fox Worth, Texas. If you don’t know, crossover thrash is a subgenre of thrash metal that is essentially a mix of the aforementioned genre and hardcore punk, it includes fast pacing riffs, short songs, humorous or political lyrics. And many more, some big crossover thrash bands are Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I, Nuclear Assault and Ratos de Porão. And for more modern examples, there are bands like Power Trip, which this band is very influenced by, Municipal Waste and Gamma Bomb.
This EP, MANIAC, is their debut EP, and the first thing they ever released, and in my opinion it’s a very good EP at it. This album is absolutely full to the core of killer riffs, which are best shown in the title track, which is one of best thrash metal songs i’ve heard this year. I admit, i haven’t listened to many, but it’s still a pretty good classical style headbanging thrash song, the same can be said to “Hell’s Half Acre”, that is again full of killer riffs, has a good vocal performance of Seth Gilmore, who kinda sounds like Chuck Schuldiner, and i really like that. The killer riffs continue in “Neutralized”, that is another great song. There’s the good cover of “Raise the Dead” by Bathory, which i really like, albeit i think it doesn’t really capture the spooky vibe of the original song, but it’s a pretty nice cover, And of course we can’t not talk about the intro song, “The Javelin”, it’s a slow, heavy thrash song, that really captures very well the atmosphere that this album is trying to convey. So, musically wise. It’s great, the vocals are good and the production is fine (although I can't hear the bass sometimes), but it’s still a pretty good EP by all things considered.
Of course it’s not flawless, and neither is it unique. it’s a pretty standard, Power Trip esque EP, the riffs while great are not something i haven’t heard before in a thrash metal, so are the lyrics, they are honestly kinda generic and silly, but not in a funny way, it’s just kinda overdone, And i’m also not hearing much “crossover” in this album, at all, all the songs have standard lengths (the shortest song is an intro, and even that is 2 minutes long), and i also don’t find the riffs particularly HC-ish, it just sounds like a standard thrash album. which is not bad, specially in this case. But yes it’s not exactly what i think when i think of crossover thrash.
But besides that it’s all fine. It’s a pretty good EP, especially for a debut EP. The riffs are on point, the vocals are good, production is fine and works well, they may need to work a little more on the lyrics and make it a little less derivative, but it's a pretty good EP, and I really recommend it.
